PPC has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with Yellow Door Energy (YDE) for a 24,5 megawatt peak (MWp) solar wheeling project that will supply electricity to four of its cement manufacturing facilities via the Eskom grid.
The Naledi Ya YDE Solar Park, to be built near Leeudoringstad in North West Province, is expected to generate 57,5 million kWh in its first year of operation. The electricity will be wheeled to PPC Slurry in North West Province and PPC Dwaalboom in Limpopo as well as PPC De Hoek and PPC Riebeek in the Western Cape.
The solar facility will include the installation of over 20 000 panels and a 43 km overhead line to connect to the Eskom network. YDE will finance, design, construct, operate and maintain the plant under the terms of the agreement.
“This agreement is our second partnership to secure renewable energy, which demonstrates PPC’s commitment to reducing reliance on traditional energy sources,” says Ernesto Acosta, Chief Operating Officer at PPC.
The project also supports PPC’s compliance with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism introducing carbon pricing on certain imports into the European Union (EU) to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries.
