The City of Cape Town is close to completing a R6 million project to replace approximately 2 000 metres of overhead electricity lines with underground cables in Sea Point. It is expected to be completed by May.
The project is aiming to improve network reliability, safety and visual appeal.
So far, 22 electricity poles have been removed and underground cables have been installed in five streets. Work is still to be completed in four roads: Clifford, Northumbria, Edward and Deane.
The city plans to extend underground cabling projects to Oranjezicht and Woodstock in the near future.
“As a vandalism and theft deterrent, the city uses aluminium cabling for street lights and for its low-voltage and medium-voltage networks for the material’s lower resale value compared to copper,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Xanthea Limberg.
