The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) are calling on qualified individuals to register as energy performance certificate (EPC) professionals.
The DMRE has announced that it is now mandatory to display EPCs on non-residential buildings larger than 1 000 m2. The deadline for compliance is August 3 of this year. The DMRE is currently seeking energy experts to help evaluate the energy usage of these buildings and issue the necessary EPCs.
The regulations require that these buildings are registered on the National Building Energy Performance Register, administered by SANEDI, on or before August 3, 2024 and the EPCs to be displayed by December 7, 2025.
Registration of EPC professionals started on June 13 for individuals or members affiliated with inspection bodies accredited by the South African National Accreditation System that previously had exclusive rights to assess energy usage and issue certificates for buildings.
“Effective Monday, July 8, all other eligible individuals with the necessary knowledge and qualifications will also be allowed to register as EPC professionals to conduct energy performance assessments and issue EPCs,” the DMRE and SANEDI said in a joint statement.
Applicants must hold a Grade 12 or NQF 4 qualification and a diploma or bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy management, natural sciences, property studies, architecture, quantity surveying or construction management.
Once registered, EPC professionals must attend compulsory training in energy performance assessment, energy audits or energy management provided by SANEDI-approved training providers.
