Despite holding over 620 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves – accounting for 7% of global reserves – Africa remains underexplored in terms of natural gas development.
The upcoming Africa Gas Forum – part of Africa Energy Indaba set to take place from March 4-6 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre – will focus on the challenges and opportunities associated with Africa’s natural gas reserves.
The forum will examine key gas basins, including the Orange Basin, and explore emerging reserves in Zimbabwe and onshore Namibia. Discussions will centre on the potential of these reserves to contribute to domestic energy supply and export markets.
A major focus of the event will be on the barriers to gas monetisation including infrastructure shortfalls, regulatory complexities and financing constraints. Delegates will also assess the feasibility of developing liquefied natural gas export facilities and expanding regional energy trade to improve market access.
Case studies from countries such as Mozambique, Egypt and Nigeria will be reviewed to identify lessons learned in gas development and policy implementation.
“The Africa Gas Forum provides a dedicated space to explore the vast opportunities in Africa’s gas sector. It is a vital step towards unlocking the full potential of these resources to power sustainable development and economic transformation across the continent,” says Liz Hart, Managing Director of Africa Energy Indaba.
