Atlantis Foundries in Cape Town has brought a 13 MW solar farm online. The installation reduces the company’s reliance on Eskom while contributing to the City of Cape Town’s electricity. Comprising more than 20 000 solar panels, it is expected to supply 20% of the company’s power needs.
The solar farm is connected to the City of Cape Town’s grid so Atlantis Foundries can sell up to 5 MW of electricity to the city at certain times of the day. This energy can be distributed across the municipality through the city’s wheeling programme. “As we reduce our reliance on Eskom, we want residents and businesses to be able to sell their excess power to the city,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Engineered, financed, constructed and operated by Energy Partners, the solar system is expected to generate over 20 000 MWh annually. The project is also set to cut more than 21 000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
