The South African Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been granted authority to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration related to nine Eskom contracts. The probe will focus on claims of corruption and mismanagement in coal service contracts totalling over R2,3 billion.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed two proclamations – one new and one amended – empowering the SIU to scrutinise these allegations and to recover any state losses. According to the SIU, the investigation will target unauthorised, irregular, fruitless or wasteful expenditure by Eskom or the state. It will also examine any unlawful or improper conduct by Eskom officials, employees, suppliers, service providers or other involved parties.

The scope of the investigation includes alleged misconduct between March 1, 2006 and August 30, 2024.

Eskom told Energize: “We welcome the proclamation signed by the President authorising the SIU to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration related to Eskom’s affairs.”
