Northam Platinum Holdings has finalised a power purchase agreement (PPA) with an independent power producer for a 140 MW wind farm to supply energy to its mining and processing operations.
This is Northam’s second major renewable energy agreement following the October 2024 PPA for an 80 MW solar plant at its Zondereinde mine.
The wind farm, located near Sutherland in the Western Cape, is expected to generate 460 GWh annually and will supply power to Northam’s three operational sites via the Eskom grid. Construction is set to begin immediately with electricity supply anticipated in the 2027 financial year.
The project is being developed by a consortium including G7 Renewable Energies and Exxaro Resources subsidiary Cennergi Holdings. Financing is provided by Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking, Standard Bank and Absa Bank.
Northam has indicated that its broader renewable energy strategy includes additional solar and battery storage projects. The combined wind and solar capacity is expected to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by up to 45% while mitigating energy cost pressures and improving supply security.
