While the South African government undertakes consultations for the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2024, it is essential to rethink how electricity is generated and distributed. The traditional model of large, centralised power stations transmitting electricity over vast distances must evolve into a decentralised, cell-based approach. South Africa’s electricity planning should shift towards integrating small modular reactors (SMRs) at strategic nodal points, says nuclear physicist Dr Kelvin Kemm, Chairman of Stratek Global, an energy development company based in Pretoria.
