The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is urging stakeholders, including members of the public, to submit their comments on the proposed regulations for unconventional gas development in South Africa before January 16. The draft regulations, published in the Government Gazette in October, aim to establish a comprehensive framework for the exploration and production of unconventional gas resources, including shale gas. The regulations are designed to ensure such activities are conducted responsibly with emphasis on environmental protection and sustainable development.

Unconventional gas resources, such as shale gas, coalbed methane and tight gas, are found in geological formations that require advanced extraction techniques like hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and horizontal drilling. These methods have raised significant concerns about environmental impacts, including groundwater contamination, water use and seismic activity.

The draft regulations aim to address these concerns while promoting the sustainable development of South Africa’s unconventional gas potential, particularly in regions like the Karoo Basin, the DMRE said.

Key aspects of the draft regulations include requirements for environmental impact assessments, stringent water use management protocols and mandatory community engagement processes.
