The eThekwini Municipality has applied for ministerial approval to procure its own electricity generation capacity. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has called for public participation on the application, with a hearing scheduled for March 13.
As part of the application, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality seeks approval to procure 100 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 300 MW of natural gas from independent power producers (IPPs). The initiative is expected to diversify the city’s energy mix, enhance grid stability and contribute to long-term energy security.
The application falls under Section 34 of the Electricity Regulation Act, which allows the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy to determine the need for new generation capacity and to allocate responsibility for its development. If approved, eThekwini could take a step toward reducing its reliance on Eskom by sourcing alternative power solutions.
The public hearing will provide a platform for stakeholders to voice their views on the municipality’s plans. Submissions must be made to NERSA by February 9. Further details, including the official notice and participation guidelines, can be found here.
