The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) has launched the latest version of its PV GreenCard mobile app to streamline installations by offering real-time project documentation and facilitating compliance with industry standards.
SAPVIA launched the PV GreenCard programme in 2017 to promote skills development and quality assurance and support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the PV sector. The programme offers a certification process and training for PV installers aimed at standardising installation practices and ensuring compliance.
The app, for iOS and Android, allows certified PV installers to generate detailed PV GreenCard reports directly from the field, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of documentation, said Sinethemba Mnguni, Technical Specialist at SAPVIA, who presented the app’s features during a webinar on October 31.
“Unlike many web-based portals, the PV GreenCard mobile app produces complete reports without truncation, ensuring every detail is fully documented. The app also features a two-way chat function for immediate feedback between customers and installers, fostering better communication and transparency.”
In addition, the PV GreenCard details the specifications of the solar PV system and contains a checklist that ensures installation steps have been completed to the required standard. The report can be used as proof of compliance for insurance, finance and regulatory purposes.
The app guides installers through a structured reporting process, which includes:
- System information: Installers record customer details and site information, ensuring transparency and traceability.
- Commissioning: Critical commissioning steps including safety checks, equipment settings and labelling requirements are logged to meet regulatory standards.
- Documentation: Essential documents, such as site assessments and commissioning reports, are uploaded to create a comprehensive record of each installation.
The app also allows customers to track installation progress with a view of each stage’s completion and essential installer credentials including name, ID number, company and Department of Employment and Labour registration, Mnguni said.
SAPVIA’s PV GreenCard programme includes a five-day training module that has certified over 400 companies across South Africa, primarily SMEs.
