Eskom has responded to Centlec’s intention to take over electricity supply in three Free State towns – Thaba Nchu, Wepener and Soutpan – following a recent article published by Netwerk24. The article notes Centlec’s plan and approval by the Mangaung Council for the transfer of supply.
Centlec is a municipal electricity distributor operating under the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, which includes Bloemfontein and surrounding areas. Centlec purchases electricity in bulk from Eskom and manages the local distribution network including maintenance, billing and customer service.
In a media statement, Eskom acknowledged Centlec’s intention and the council’s support. “However, Eskom has not been consulted on this matter and reserves its rights regarding the regulatory process related to licensing and the transfer of supply areas.
“We want to reassure our customers in these regions that Eskom remains responsible for their electricity needs and is committed to ensuring continued reliable electricity supply.”
