After an opening keynote by invited VIP, Onicah Rantwane, Senior Advisor - Electricity Pricing at Eskom, on Eskom's new virtual wheeling and trading framework, expert presenters from Independent Energy Pool, Energy Exchange of Southern Africa, PowerX and Africa GreenCo will each have a 20-minute slot to give their views on the topic at hand. This will then be followed by a 40-minute “fireside discussion” and Q&A session facilitated by Chris Yelland and Linsey Dyer.
Background
Eskom is currently structured as vertically integrated electricity utility encompassing generation, transmission and distribution. However, there are far reaching plans to restructure the electricity supply industry to comprise a diversified, competitive generation sector, an independent transmission system operator, an independent market operator, an electricity, capacity and ancillary services market, and an electricity trading and distribution sector.
Already, there has been a move away from the monopoly power generation utility to the single-buyer model where, in addition to its own dominant power generation activities, Eskom procures energy and capacity from independent power producers (IPPs). This was followed the emergence of one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one and many-to-many wheeling arrangements, using the Eskom grid as the platform connecting independent electricity generators to off-takers. More recently we have seen the emergence of third-party traders, procuring electricity from one or more IPPs, using the Eskom and municipal networks, and selling to a number of off-takers in the mining, industrial, manufacturing and commercial sectors. In due course this may even extend to retail energy trading down to the domestic customer level.
Ultimately, these are all pathways towards a liberalised electricity supply industry where a diversified range of large, medium and small generators and prosumers supply energy into the electricity grid based on economic principles through power purchase agreements, bilateral and multi-lateral contracts, traders and an electricity market(s), to customers connected to the grid and distribution networks.
This webinar will focus on the emergence of electricity traders, highlighting the value-adding role they play, and the mechanisms they use, in facilitating optimisation of the electricity grid, diversification of electricity supply options, mitigation of risk and improvement of the terms of power purchase agreements.
