South Africa and the world are in the midst of an energy crisis. Loadshedding has become a way of living and the rising petrol and diesel prices are driving daily expenses to new records. Renewable energy resources have never been more important to consider in our country. South Africa first introduced the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) in 2011. The program includes an initiative to install 17,8 GW of renewable energy in South Africa before 2030. The goal of the REI4P is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while minimizing the country's reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
To try and come up with possible solutions CTU Training Solutions is hosting a webinar in collaboration with the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) and the South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) on 8 November 2022 from 12h00 to 13h30 and we are expecting more than 300 people to attend.
There is an ever-increasing demand to fill the skills gaps identified in South Africa in the environmental and related fields of which many have been classified as scarce and critical skills areas and thus a priority for skills development.
The webinar will bring together a panel of energy-related experts in our country to discuss the future of alternative and sustainable energy and the immense skills shortage we are experiencing. The webinar will be attended by industry experts, academia, students, alumni, Government and other interested parties. It will be a less formal, roundtable-like discussion with a facilitator, and will last for approximately 90 minutes.

According to Johan Wildenboer, PR and Events Manager for CTU the panel of experts will discuss whether renewable energy is the same as sustainable energy. The panel will debate whether a set of critical skills are needed and will talk about skills, experience and job shortages in this expanding industry. Furthermore, the panel will share thoughts on who needs to be skilled and the role of just transition. The question will be asked on what mechanisms should be in place to ensure the skills gap are bridged?
“CTU believes in the strategic development of our youth to be ready to step into the roles that the green economy will require from them. And in the achievement of creating industry ready individuals, through the power of partnerships, we will contribute to make the transition to a green economy a feasible and successful one.”, says Johan Wildenboer
