Klipheuwel Wind Farm has launched its inaugural wind turbine technician training programme aiming to upskill local youth and meet growing demand for skilled technicians in South Africa’s renewable energy sector.
The full-time course began with 12 electricians last month.
Developed by the South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre, a division of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, the six-month training programme blends theoretical and practical learning. On completion, participants receive an accredited Quality Council for Trades and Occupations wind turbine service technician certificate.
The programme is open to applicants from nearby communities such as Botrivier, Caledon, Grabouw, Gardendale, Tesselaarsdal, Riviersonderend and Villiersdorp.
Applicants must have prior qualifications including NQF Level 4 for an electrician (low, medium or high voltage), mechatronics engineer, millwright, fitter and turner or national diploma in mechanical, electrical or mechatronics engineering.
“As the renewable energy sector grows in South Africa, demand for skilled technicians, particularly in the wind sector, continues to rise. By aligning our development efforts with current skills gaps, we aim to equip participants with highly sought-after skills, enhancing their employability,” said Nonini Makhoete, Economic Development Specialist at Klipheuwel Wind Farm.
