TotalEnergies, in partnership with independent power producers Mulilo and Reatile, has begun construction of a 140 MW wind farm and a 120 MW solar plant. The project aims to deliver 900 GWh of electricity annually to Sasol’s Secunda site and Air Liquide’s oxygen production facility approximately 700 km away.
In 2023, the consortium signed 20-year corporate power purchase agreements with Sasol South Africa and Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa to supply a total of 260 MW of renewable electricity. Situated in the Northern Cape, these facilities are expected to become operational by the end of 2026.
“These major renewable projects will contribute to South Africa’s energy transition by increasing its share of renewables and gas as alternatives to coal,” says Bertrand Bouvet, Managing Director of TotalEnergies Renewables South Africa.
