Tharisa has entered into a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy to supply 44% of the electricity needed by its mine north of Pretoria through wheeled renewable energy.
In terms of the 15-year PPA, the mine will receive power from wind and solar farms in the Western Cape and Northern Cape through the national grid from 2026.
TotalEnergies Renewables South Africa and Chariot Transitional Power South Africa are also establishing a 40 MW solar power plant to meet another 30% of the Tharisa mine’s energy requirements.
Both projects support Tharisa’s 2030 goal to reduce its carbon footprint by 30%.
