The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Wind Industry Internship Programme (WIIP).
This initiative supports South Africa’s goal to achieve a low-carbon economy and a climate-resilient society by creating jobs in line with the country’s Just Energy Transition Investment Plan and the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan, said SAWEA.
Applications close on November 14.
The initiative aims to address the need for practical experience in the renewable energy sector. In the first quarter of 2024, wind technology accounted for 4,9% of South Africa’s total electricity consumption and 5,3% in the third quarter of 2024. This indicates wind energy’s increasing contribution to the energy mix, according to SAWEA.
Programme interns will acquire practical experience over eight months – supplemented by a 10-day work readiness course – with workplace skills training, including computer literacy and professional etiquette, ensuring they are well-prepared for the workplace.
Rapid expansion of the wind industry requires a diverse array of skills and roles. The WIIP is an opportunity for young graduates to bridge the gap between graduation and employment.
In its fourth year, the programme placed over 20 interns in 2024 – many have transitioned into permanent roles, said SAWEA. It aims to place 30 interns across member organisations in 2025, providing a structured pathway into the renewable energy sector.
WIIP is open to young people from various academic backgrounds including engineering, natural sciences, administration, social sciences and information technology. Participants engage in meaningful work that contributes to South Africa’s renewable energy landscape, added SAWEA.
“We are excited to cultivate the next generation of renewable energy leaders. As the sector evolves, we witness a rise in emerging positions that the industry requires. These include engineers, project managers, environmental experts and data analysts. Through this programme, we are able to attract passionate youth and develop their skills in alignment with the sector’s rapid growth,” said Morongoa Ramaboa, SAWEA’s Chief Communications Officer.
Application process
Candidates can submit their applications on the SAWEA application platform or send their CVs, with certified copies of their qualifications and identity documents, to Agnes Lekula, who can also provide details on the programme, at agnes@sawea.co.za.
Companies that can provide training should register on the SAWEA host company website.
