Riverstone Mall in Meyerton, south of Johannesburg, developed by Alley Roads, will feature a hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) to be installed by embedded clean energy utility infrastructure developer Blue Energy Africa.
A ~5 MWh battery will be fed by a 2,3 MWp PV panel system providing enough power for the mall to operate nearly off-grid. The installation is expected to save more than 4 000 t of carbon dioxide emissions per annum, equating to a total carbon emission savings in excess of 80 000 t over 20 years compared to conventional power derived from the grid, according to Blue Energy Africa.
The hybrid energy solution will not only ensure uninterrupted experience for shoppers but also protect tenants against increases in utility costs.
The R370 million, 20 000 m2 first-phase development of the mall is nearing completion.
“Up to now, commercial property owners mostly installed solar panels to take their malls partially off-grid. Being a community shopping centre, Riverstone Mall is the ideal size to operate mostly independently from the national power grid. The 2,3 MWp PV panel system feeding the battery will ensure the mall can operate during inclement weather conditions and in the evenings,” says Ivan Pretorius, founder and CEO of Alley Roads.
“We are excited to launch our partnership with Alley Roads, marking a significant milestone in their clean energy journey. This project will not only provide sustainable energy at affordable rates but also ensure energy security when needed. By integrating best-in-class technology, the solution is designed to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with our commitment to environmental stewardship. It will set new standards in technical integration and optimisation, reinforcing our shared goal of advancing sustainability and environmental responsibility,” says Jan van Ravenswaay, Chief Technology Officer at Blue Energy Africa.
