NERSA calls for electricity tariff applications by end April

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) has called on all licensed municipalities and private electricity distributors to submit their electricity tariff applications for the 2025/26 financial year by April 30.

In a recent notice, NERSA reminded licensees that the submission of tariff applications is a legal requirement in terms of the Electricity Regulation Act read together with the Municipal Finance Management Act and licence conditions. The regulator emphasised that all applications must be supported by an updated cost of supply study.

“Failure to comply with this requirement will result in no adjustment to electricity tariffs for FY2025/26,” NERSA warned.

The cost of supply study ensures tariffs reflect the actual cost of providing electricity and that increases are justifiable. Submissions received by the deadline will enable NERSA to process and approve the applications in time for the implementation of new tariffs on July 1, the regulator said.
