The National Energy Regulator of SA (NERSA) has approved the revised National Rationalised Specifications Code of Practice (NRS CoP), providing additional tools for managing the national grid at advanced stages of load shedding and reducing the possible need for emergency measures.
The code addresses various aspects related to electricity distribution by mandating compliance for all NERSA licensed electricity distribution utilities, including load reduction practices, system restoration and safeguarding essential loads during emergencies to mitigate the impact of electricity load shedding stages (Stage Eight and beyond) and preventing national blackouts.
“Developed collaboratively with key stakeholders, including Eskom and municipalities, this framework underscores the importance of proactive planning and risk mitigation to tackle current electricity crises and future challenges effectively,” says chairman of the management committee of the NRS Association of South Africa, Vally Padayachee.
Acknowledging the importance of readiness and preparedness, the NRS Association underscores the proactive measures taken to empower electricity utilities in anticipating and responding to potential load shedding scenarios beyond Stage Eight.
In the event of an escalated load shedding scenario, the NRS CoP equips grid operators with additional tools to manage the system effectively, reducing reliance on emergency measures. Critical mechanisms, such as under-frequency protection, are addressed to mitigate the risk of national blackouts.
The NRS CoP (Edition 3) document is accessible on the NERSA website.
