MTN has launched a microgrid initiative in Orange Farm. Designed to address the challenges of energy poverty and digital exclusion in this underserved community, the project, implemented in partnership with non-profit company Ukukubona, will connect 96 homes to a renewable energy system.

This will be the first time many residents will have access to electricity, MTN said in a statement. “With over 70 000 households in Orange Farm, access to affordable and reliable electricity has been a persistent challenge. This initiative not only tackles energy poverty but also integrates internet access. Community members will gain opportunities to resell WiFi tokens and electricity, creating new streams of income while promoting local entrepreneurship.”

Ukukubona will supply locally sourced materials for the project. The infrastructure will be remotely monitored, allowing for real-time tracking of system performance and ensuring timely maintenance.

Project specifics include:

· Energy provision via the microgrid supplying renewable energy tailored to the needs of low-income households and reducing reliance on expensive and environmentally damaging alternatives.

· Connectivity integration through internet access bundled with the energy system to support educational, business and healthcare activities.

· Community involvement by equipping local residents with technical skills to maintain the infrastructure.

The microgrid initiative is part of MTN’s broader Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on integrating renewable energy solutions into underserved communities.
