Diesel generator sets are commonly used as standby power plant, and under normal standby conditions, are expected to operate several hours per month, be serviced on an annual or biannual basis, and have an operating lifetime of 15-20 years without major overhaul. Load shedding has changed the operating pattern of standby generators, with significant consequences for maintenance routines and lifetime expectancy. Keeping these sets running under load shed conditions requires a modification to the normal regular service and maintenance programme, which is based on the running hours of the machine
