Globeleq has appointed Jonathan Hoffman as its permanent CEO following a nine-month period as interim CEO. The appointment follows what the company described as “a thorough and extensive search process” that considered internal and external candidates.
Hoffman, who joined Globeleq in 2010, was appointed Chief Development Officer in 2020 and took over as interim CEO in July 2024. He has led the company’s development and investment activities, including the recent award of the Red Sands battery storage project that Globeleq says is the largest standalone facility of its kind on the African continent.
Globeleq owns and operates 12 renewable power plants across South Africa, Mozambique and Kenya, and has 485 MW under construction. Its current growth strategy prioritises projects in Southern Africa and Kenya with a development pipeline that includes several large-scale assets.
According to Globeleq, the group has nearly doubled its operating and in-construction capacity since 2015 and was responsible for 43% of all utility-scale, non-hydro renewable and gas independent power producer generation reaching financial close in Sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa) in the 2020s.
“I am thrilled to lead Globeleq’s talented team to deliver on our mission and drive the energy transition in Southern Africa. My absolute commitment is to solve problems for our customers and deliver value to our shareholders,” Hoffman says.
