Renewable energy provider Grid Africa – with operations in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia and Kenya – has signed a solar agreement with technology company Huawei to build 72 MW of sustainable solar power infrastructure to serve the energy needs of mines in Zimbabwe.
The collaboration is a step in improving energy efficiency and operational sustainability for Zimbabwe’s mining sector at a time when power blackouts have caused US$500 million revenue loss, said Grid Africa in a statement. The partnership will alleviate pressure on the strained national grid, drive down operational expenses and ensure steady and uninterrupted power supply – ultimately bolstering operational continuity for mining companies.
“By integrating solar solutions through this collaboration, we are poised to bring about a transformative positive impact on the mines in Zimbabwe. This initiative will not only optimise energy use but also provide a sustainable power source that will enhance the operational efficiency and financial stability of the mining sector,” said Norman Moyo, CEO of Grid Africa.

Using solar power in mining operations promises multiple benefits including reduced reliance on the national grid, substantial cost reductions and increased operational resilience through consistent power supply. A 72 MW solar project could create approximately 1 152 to 3 744 direct and indirect jobs while also contributing to foreign currency savings by offsetting power imports, stated Grid Africa. As Huawei is a global energy player, this partnership further underscores the integration of cutting-edge technological expertise and commitment to sustainability on a global scale.
