South Africa’s Green Hydrogen National Programme has attracted projects worth R800 billion following the announcement of nine strategic integrated projects valued at R300 billion. Around 20% of the investments are at bankable feasibility stage.
This was revealed by Sihle Zikalala, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure at the DEVAC HYDROGEN-H Indaba in Sandton last week.
Zikalala said the following projects are at different stages of development:
- Isondo Precious Metals and Sasolburg’s 60MW hydrogen production facility in Gauteng
- Prieska Power Reserve green hydrogen and ammonia production and Boegoebaai port and green hydrogen cluster in the Northern Cape
- Hive green ammonia export project in the Eastern Cape
- ArcelorMittal’s green steel project in Saldanha, Western Cape
Zikalala called on green hydrogen players to collaborate with government.
“We look to you to take a lead in facilitating green hydrogen manufacturing capability in a manner that localises the production of upstream and downstream value-added products.”
He said South Africa could realise its potential to produce 6-13 million tons of green hydrogen and derivatives per year by 2050.
South Africa, as a green hydrogen investment destination, offers substantial additional opportunities including green shipping, green fertiliser production, electrolyser manufacturing, pipeline development and greenfield port developments, he added.
