On Friday 30 September 2022, the minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, announced the names of the new board members of Eskom.
- Mpho Makwana, who serves on a number of other boards, including as a non-executive chairman of ArcelorMittal South Africa, is its new chairman.
- Busisiwe Vilakazi, holds a Bachelor of Philosophy in engineering science from Oxford University, UK.
- Lwazi Goqwana’s experience includes manufacturing, construction, financial services, logistics, and energy. Between 2019 and 2021, he served on the ministerial task team offering suggestions for improvements at Eskom.
- Mthetho Nyathi has a degree in mechanical engineering. His experience includes being CE of MTN SA, CEO at Altron, and worked at IBM and Microsoft.
- Leslie Mkhabela is an attorney with experience in restructuring state-owned entities.
- Fatima Ghani is a chartered accountant who worked in the financial sector, in African and Middle Eastern businesses.
- Ayanda Mafuleka is a chartered accountant and CEO of Fasset, a SETA for the finance, accounting, and management consulting sectors.
- Tsakani Mthombeni, and engineer, worked for Gold Fields and Anglo American, helping Anglo’s mining operations adapt to meet the challenge of climate change.
- Claudelle von Eck is a change management expert.
- Tryphosa Romano, a chartered accountant who worked for National Treasury and was the CFO at PPC.
- Bheki Ntshalintshali is a trade unionist who was the General Secretary of Cosatu.
- Clive le Roux served as chief nuclear officer at Eskom.
- Rod Crompton, who served on the previous board too, is director of the Energy Leadership Centre at Wits Business School. He has experience in policy, strategy and economic regulation in the energy sector.
The new board has been appointed on a three-year term, effective from 1 October 2022.
Gordhan also confirmed that Eskom’s executive leadership, CEO André de Ruyter, CFO Calib Cassim, and COO Jan Oberholzer will remain in charge of the power utility’s day-to-day operations. Rod Crompton, who served on the previous board, will also retain his post.
