Cape Town launches online platform for electricity service applications

The City of Cape Town has launched an online energy services application platform to streamline the process of applying for new or modified electricity connections.

The new system allows users to submit applications for electricity services online including new supply requests, meter upgrades and replacements. It is expected to automate parts of the application process including generating quotations, tracking application progress and reducing paperwork with the goal of improving turnaround times and increasing transparency.

“Over the years, applying for electricity connections has been an administratively intensive process often involving significant paperwork and long waiting periods. By moving this service online, we are improving efficiency and ensuring that energy service connections are approved in record time,” says the city’s Mayoral Committee Member for Energy Xanthea Limberg.

The online platform follows Cape Town’s introduction of a similar application system for solar photovoltaic (PV) connections in 2024. “Our solar PV application system was a major success and this new platform builds on that by making electricity service applications faster and more accessible,” Limberg says.

The digital transition is part of Cape Town’s broader Energy Mayoral Priority Programme to develop a modern and responsive energy utility. “This platform represents an important step in making our electricity services smarter and more adaptable to market shifts and regulatory changes,” Limberg says.

Businesses and residents seeking to apply for electricity services must register on the city’s e-Services portal, which also allows users to check accounts and apply for other municipal services.
