BYD Energy Storage launched its latest modular residential storage solution, the Battery-Box LV5.0+, alongside a new range of hybrid inverters at Solar & Storage Live Africa in Johannesburg last week.
According to BYD, the LV5.0+ builds on the design of its predecessor, the LV5.0 – introduced to the South African market in 2024 – and offers improved power output, enhanced system performance and an extended warranty. The system is scalable from 5,12 kWh to 163,84 kWh and can be paired with either BYD’s new Power-Box inverters or a range of low-voltage inverters from third-party suppliers.
“The 1C charge and discharge capability provides better performance,” said Jiang Feng, Director of Residential Energy Storage Systems at BYD Energy Storage. “With the option to combine the Battery-Box LV5.0+ with our Power-Box inverters, we offer a one-stop shop concept while giving customers full flexibility with their inverter choices.”
The inverter combinations will be available in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and other markets from July. “The African market is very important for BYD Energy Storage. As the continent is eager for green transformation solutions, our storage systems are in high demand,” Feng said.
The LV5.0+ is designed for ease of use with fast cabling and one-button auto-configuration for compatible inverters, said Feng. Each module can be connected directly to the inverter, removing the need for a separate battery management unit.
The system includes four levels of safety:
- Cell-level: Lithium iron phosphate cells with explosion-proof casing.
- Module-level: Thermal runaway prevention and real-time temperature monitoring.
- Pack-level: 24/7 parameter monitoring for short-circuit and insulation protection.
- System-level: Real-time diagnostics with automatic alerts and shutdown functionality.
The company notes that the system complies with international standards such as UL 1642, IEC 62619 and UN38.3 and carries a 10-year warranty.
The system can be monitored through the BYD Energy app, which provides real-time energy flow tracking, remote diagnostics and over-the-air updates, said Feng.
The Power-Box range of hybrid inverters is available in single- and three-phase models:
- The Power-Box SL3/3.68/4.6/5/6K (single-phase) supports 150% photovoltaic (PV) oversizing, is IP66-rated and includes Type II surge protection.
- The Power-Box SL7/8/10K (three-phase) supports up to 20 A PV input current, includes generator control and allows up to 200% peak output.
Both inverter types include 10-year warranties and are equipped with continuous electrical safety monitoring and lightning protection.
