The mining industry has long underestimated the critical role that adequate lighting plays at the stope face. As the most challenging area to illuminate – characterised by treacherous terrain, confined spaces and the constant risk of falling rock – the stope is also the most congested zone in a mine and the site of the majority of falls of ground (FOG) incidents posing many dangers to miners, says Christiaan Gerber, Manager of the SAFELIGHT Division at M and J Mining.
